Florida car insurance requirements

The legal minimum in Florida is PIP 10 / PD 10. Here's what that means, why most drivers carry more, and how to compare quotes without spam calls.

Minimum coverage in Florida

  • Personal injury protection (PIP): $10,000
  • Property damage liability: $10,000 per accident
  • Fault system: No-fault state

Florida requires $10,000 PIP and $10,000 property damage liability; bodily injury liability is not required for most drivers.

What "PIP 10 / PD 10" actually means

In Florida, your own PIP pays the first $10,000 of your medical costs regardless of fault, and property damage liability pays up to $10,000 for damage you cause to others' property.

Is the minimum enough?

For most drivers, no. A single hospital stay or a crash involving a newer vehicle can exceed state minimums quickly. Many advisors suggest 100/300/100 liability if you own a home or have savings to protect, plus collision and comprehensive if your car is financed or would be costly to replace.

How no-fault works in Florida

Florida is a no-fault state: after a crash, each driver's own policy pays their medical bills first, no matter who caused it. You can usually only sue the other driver for serious injuries.

Ways to pay less in Florida

  • Bundle auto with home or renters insurance.
  • Raise your collision deductible if you have an emergency fund.
  • Ask about good-driver, multi-car, and paid-in-full discounts.
  • Compare at least three quotes every year — rates for the same driver vary widely between carriers.

Requirements change. Confirm current rules with the Florida Department of Insurance or DMV before buying a policy.
