What "25/50/25" actually means

If you cause a crash in Rhode Island, your policy pays up to $25,000 for one injured person, up to $50,000 total for everyone injured, and up to $25,000 for damage to other people's cars or property. Anything above those limits can come out of your own pocket.

Is the minimum enough?

For most drivers, no. A single hospital stay or a crash involving a newer vehicle can exceed state minimums quickly. Many advisors suggest 100/300/100 liability if you own a home or have savings to protect, plus collision and comprehensive if your car is financed or would be costly to replace.

How at-fault works in Rhode Island

Rhode Island is an at-fault state: the driver who caused the crash (and their insurer) pays for the other party's injuries and damage. That makes your liability limits especially important.

Ways to pay less in Rhode Island

  • Bundle auto with home or renters insurance.
  • Raise your collision deductible if you have an emergency fund.
  • Ask about good-driver, multi-car, and paid-in-full discounts.
  • Compare at least three quotes every year — rates for the same driver vary widely between carriers.

Requirements change. Confirm current rules with the Rhode Island Department of Insurance or DMV before buying a policy.
