What "20/40/15" actually means

If you cause a crash in Iowa, your policy pays up to $20,000 for one injured person, up to $40,000 total for everyone injured, and up to $15,000 for damage to other people's cars or property. Anything above those limits can come out of your own pocket.

Is the minimum enough?

For most drivers, no. A single hospital stay or a crash involving a newer vehicle can exceed state minimums quickly. Many advisors suggest 100/300/100 liability if you own a home or have savings to protect, plus collision and comprehensive if your car is financed or would be costly to replace.

How at-fault works in Iowa

Iowa is an at-fault state: the driver who caused the crash (and their insurer) pays for the other party's injuries and damage. That makes your liability limits especially important.

Ways to pay less in Iowa

  • Bundle auto with home or renters insurance.
  • Raise your collision deductible if you have an emergency fund.
  • Ask about good-driver, multi-car, and paid-in-full discounts.
  • Compare at least three quotes every year — rates for the same driver vary widely between carriers.

Requirements change. Confirm current rules with the Iowa Department of Insurance or DMV before buying a policy.
